Intro To Ed Field Experience: Mrs. Barker- Day 1& 2

I have been observing for Introduction to Education over the last few weeks. I was placed in the Southside Middle School in Mrs. Barker's 6th Grade Literacy Class. Walking down the 6th Grade hallway brings back so many memories.

Mrs. Barkers room is filled with so much love and respect on both the students and the teacher's end. Every students was saying, "yes ma'am and no ma'am" to Mrs. Barker. As well as the students using manners when talking to their teacher, Mrs. Barker does the same in return when talking to her students. I feel this brings the classroom together as a whole and causes less problems in the classroom.

Day 1: As I walked in to Mrs. Barkers room, the students were quietly at work. I saw them writing in their notebooks. I looked up at the whiteboard and saw that they were working on bell work. All of the students were focused and writing. When they finished with their bell work, some pulled out books from their backpack and began reading, some students asked to go to the library and some students went to the class library. But, as soon as every student had a book they all went to reading. Mrs. Barker gave them a few minutes of reading time and then it was workbook time. All the student got out their workbooks and Mrs. Barker instructed. Before began working on the workbooks, Mrs. Barker had all the student find a new partner to pair up with and they had to have a 2 minutes conversation with the question "Is technology good for kids?". Alot of the students had good answers. Most said yes and no but they had too explanations with their no and yes. After the conversations were over Mrs. Barker read a blog to the students and then they had to answer 5 questions. By the time all the students finished their questions it was time for lunch. All the students packed up and ran out the door. A boy said something that was dirty and another boy had a remark back. All the students were laughing and cutting up and the "joke". Once the bell rang for lunch everyone opened the door and Mrs. Barker said the two boys name and they had to stay in alittle bit for lunch with Mrs. Barker.

Day 2: On day two, as I walked into class, I sat in my chair and pulled out my papers to begin observing. A girl then had walked up to me and we had a small conversation. By the time this conversation has ended, Mrs. Barkers announces that everyone needs to be working on their bell work and not talking. Everyone then stopped talking and begin writing. Mrs. Barkers put an 11 minutes timer on the promethean board for the bellwork. When the timer went off, Mrs. Barkers said, for everyone to put their notebooks and books away and get out their workbooks. All the students did so. There was chattering going on during this time, but Mrs. Barker allowed it. Once everyone had their workbooks out, they had to turn to a certain page. Mrs. Barkers waited on the students to turn to the right page and get quiet. Once the class has successfully done this, Mrs. Barkers goes around the room and asked the students what they wrote in the their notebooks for bell work. Each student who was called up said what they wrote and some had started some good conversations. In this sixth grade Literacy class, they are talking about how technoolgy has changed, and also how technology can be beneficial for even students in the middle school. Some of the students opened doors to conversations about AI. It was cool to see the young students think outside the box and not only think about computers as technology but vehicles and almost everything in this day and time. As the students finished talking, Mrs. Barkers told the students what story they was going to be reading for the day. When this was finished, Mrs. Barkers began to read the story. She read about half of the story and then allowed volunteers to read the passage as well. Once the passage was read, Mrs Barker allowed the students to partner up and answer the 6 questions. Once the questions was answered the students went back to their desk and read until it was lunch time.
